Fascination

 Over the past few weeks/months I have been having a hard time getting online to truly post my findings, thoughts, or recently learned facts. I have however been collecting links to share with you all because why not? I wanted to write more deeply on all of these things, but those thoughts have faded for the time being. Maybe I will one day be able to return and write more deeply on each one.


I want to start with Akira and how trendy it as recently become. Akira seems to be  an influencing factor on Western directors, writers, and other artists more than was originally thought or believed Nine different artists that are big in Hollywood and other countries media put it on their list of awe-inspiring animation. The fact that a director like Wes Anderson put it on his list of influencing animation shows that America truly is impacted, whether or not they know it, by anime from Japan and that in return, reflects back into the society they create in, for, by.

 The second Akira article I want to point out is from Buzzfeed, and is about fans of both the Simpsons and Akira creating Bartkira. The comic book involves a shot for shot remake and it seems that all of the pages will be created by fans. There is over 2000 pages in Akira and 700+ fans will be recreating up to six pages each.


In Japan, as is the rest of the world, more and more smartphone and just mobile technology accidents are occurring. This article by the BBC pointed out how frequently this is happening in Tokyo alone, to put a population perspective on it. 


Cake! I haven't mentioned food yet, but now I am about to. Everyone seems to love cake, and Japan has some of the most rare, eccentric types of cake in the world. It gets to the point people will travel to Japan to hunt down obscure delicatessens just to taste them. They will wait in long lines or be the first to arrive and wait in one of a few seats to purchase one. Well now, one of those cakes will be easier to attain for Midwestern Americans. Especially once it has hit national news, via NPR.


Every year, or more likely every few years, an article like this stumbles into the online public eye. A friend of mine recently texted me if this was true. I gave him a mixed answer because at some point in time it was true and it was very popular at this time. However, currently some of those are out of style, very trendy, or unknown outside of select types of media. I truly wish that this was always and forever would be fashionable, but... it isn't. I also wish that as a result, westerners would quit bringing up some of the dead styles. It is like if everyone, in reference to America, only brought up 1960's-1990's california trends like surfer dude and valley girl with all their "whoa dudes" and "like totally." It happened. At one point. At least bring up something new happening, like everyone wearing kigurumi.


I have heard mixed feelings about Uniqlo, and I find this fascinating. The facts involving uniqlo and other merchandising companies is the most interesting because it shows how small capitalistic companies really are in hindsight. They get their jean materials from the same company, pay all of their managers the same wages, employ more handicapped people, and donate more than others. These facts can be great or terrible depending on one's opinions or their effects on others, such as "are managers paid well?" or "How does donated clothing affect other countries?" but overall seems pro-active in intent.


So there is this woman in Japan and I think she might be taking a step in the right direction. I would love to know who is funding her projects, such as her vagina kayak, is it mostly perverted guys just looking for free "smut" or men attempting to empower women through sexual equality or women attempting to break societal taboos and create sexual equality in perception of genitalia? It is impressive that the kayak and crowd-funding her kayak got her arrested, however none of her statues or other pieces of work seems to have gotten her in as much trouble. I think that it is impressive how persistent she is, as well as how determined she is in creating an equality between the sexes in Japan. She might be barging her way into the public eye through her vagina, but hopefully that will help continue spreading feminism and motivating others to stand up as well.

Continuing along the train of gender in Japan, this assemblyman was relieved of his job because of sexist taunting. I think that his removal is another key indicator of Japan making progress in the right direction, parallel to the progress happening in America because more women and men are speaking out publicly about unfair, unnecessary inequality or hurtful actions against women. It is helpful because although many people think Japan is extremely behind the times on gender equality, people might not realize that Japan could be quieter about their social changes compared to other nations.

Coming down hard on pedophiles legally is tearing some of their media critics apart. According to this article, some critics say that they should come down hard on manga fans who watch and purchase manga with child-like characters. I don't know if this will also involve anime fans or not, as this article only focused on pedophiles and manga evading the new laws, so... I cannot wait to read a follow-up article on whether or not anime will get sucked into these changes and what social outcomes will happen if the critics give more of a political push.

Lastly, This Japanese poster found in a school states gender and sexual identity/preference and how acceptable they should be to people, instead of rejecting people socially just because they don't like the same type of person as everyone else. There might be some backlash for having this poster in a school, but for the sake of the students and those struggling with identities, this could really save a few lives.

I really hope I didn't already post this either actually. I want to post it to be safe because this was the final piece I ever wrote for language classes in Undergraduate. If I did post this, it would be really cool if someone told me I did, because I reviewed the list of posts and I didn't see this anywhere yet. I love to write, both in English and Japanese, even when it doesn't make sense. Since this was the final paper, I didn't get an edited copy back of this either, though I really would appreciate some assistance on some of the grammar or word choices.

フルブライトの申し込んだ後で、ジェットプロぐラッムを始めて申し込みました。ジェットで、オプションがありました。英語の教育をするか翻訳するができます。私の日本語はとても大変と思いますから、英語の教育を申し込みました。今、翻訳するが無理と思います。長崎市と福岡州と北海度週にいきたいですが、アップリケイションで、この場所に行って書きました。けど、どこでも良いも書きました。たぶん中学生か高校生と習いたいです。この人から、私も学べます。

今、文部科学書をはじめ申し込めます。今、何をするが知らないです。文部科学書のホームページでは、仕事か研究のプロ愚ラッムを読みます。このサイトから、色々なするができます。

 The other day I got lectured because I haven't been speaking in Japanese enough and it really depressed me because they compared me to a scummy loser who only utilizes conversations in my native tongue....But I do have Japanese friends I only talk in Japanese with because they're at the most basic level of English and self-teaching/not learning English at all. I don't mind talking in Japanese, but my level of vocabulary is limited and my sporadic, discombobulated schedule that varies daily/weekly is tiring in maintaining a steady review schedule. Her comments actually depressed me and I stopped talking to her for a while and she ceased all communication because I didn't want to be unfriendly towards her because of her views. When I did talk in Japanese, it was very awkward and she chalked it all up to my age as her excuse. It really hurt... and since then I've almost completely ceased using sharedtalk because I don't want to run into her or be a scummy, lazy loser like the creeps she compared me to. The best advice I received from her was to avoid sharedtalk to maintain my current level of Japanese though, because sharedtalk is the best way to deteriorate one's language skills quickly many have said.... Which seems accurate, but I guess I couldn't handle her criticisms as beneficial as they truly are.

A Continuation of Homework

Again I was going through my computer and found some more Japanese homework hidden away. These were from my final semester of school in Fall of 2013. I am pretty sure I haven't posted these yet since I have deleted almost all the files immediately after posting them, but if I did, I'm sorry in advance.

Looking back at these posts, I had a whole lot to say and stumbled along in trying to get my intentions across. My grammar is terrible and my spelling/word choice is questionable at best. I even misspelled the word "blog" at the top of each page. I kind of wish that I didn't have to submit these online so they professor would have given me the hard copy back edited. That way I could read my mistakes and mentally try not to make the same errors again. I also feel that my writing was a bit repetitive because of my limited vocabulary and a struggle to accurately use each word properly and grammatically.

I am glad that I do have these assignments to review now that I have graduated and don't study daily like I really should to retain my language abilities. Getting my life back on track will help me easily incorporate studying and reviewing time into my schedule, I just need to either find a job with a steady schedule so I can plan a weekly, predictable schedule for three months at a time, or find a job using Japanese. I recently went in to get career advice and the lady kept suggesting teaching and working for non-profit organizations. I don't want to teach because I don't feel secure in my abilities, in English grammar or Japanese overall. I am not sure what kind of non-profit I could work for before and during applying for graduate school so I will have to look into that I guess. Part of this could be related to the fact I am in the Midwest, also considered the middle of nowhere on the American map of "it" places, although minnesota has the fifth largest number of corporations/businesses in the US. So maybe if I look into one of those as well I will be able to utilize or improve my Japanese at the very least. My biggest fear ultimately is rejection and being trapped in retail forever with coworkers who make me uncomfortable because they aren't trustworthy... But that is a story for another day.

治虫手塚

　最近、アメリカへ、たくさん治虫手塚の漫画を増やして輸入します。色々な古い漫画も輸入しています。しかし、治虫手塚の漫画の輸入は大切ですから、彼のコンテンツは深いテーマと理論がいっぱいあります。例えば、手塚の｢地球を飲む｣用に漫画です。この漫画の理論は人類の復讐は無意味な生活です。世の中のお金とルールは無意味もです。代わりに、愛情と打ち合わせの生活は一番他右折ですが、復讐はとても無理です。この漫画は任期二里増したから、大人の読者は一般的な普通になっていると思います。アメリカへ、アニメと漫画は普通なポップカルチャーですが、色々な時代の読者も漫画を読みたいです。それは大切ですから、アメリカと日本はみつばれと思います。

英語のオノマトペ

　英語のオノマトペと手持ちがいます。使いもとても違います。あめりかへ、大人は赤ちゃんにオノマトペで話せます。赤ちゃんと子供は簡単な音をわかりますから、大人はそれへははせます。けど、大人は大人にぜんぜん話しません。大人と大人に、オノマトペはとても無礼で、失礼で幼稚で、傷つけます。英語おとなをあなしませんが、大きい言葉はインテリジェントし、ラテン語からし、せんれんされたし、教育を受けたしします。しかし、日本語で、もうすぐ大人はオノマトペを使います。例えば、日本には、人の笑いを記述ために、｢ニコニコ｣か｢ふふ｣か「くすくす」をはなします。英語で、ことばだけで説明できます。この違いは大切ですが、日本語で、何でもを説明あするは簡単です。英語で、知らない説明名言葉ですから、模倣しなければなりません。

いじめ

　アメリカのいじめは一人と一人か二人と二人の問題です。日本のいじめは一人か二人対グループです。例えば、｢ライフ｣のついてに漫画は日本のグループいじめです。これではまなみと授業はあゆむに敵対します。けど、アメリカのいじめは｢エクリスマスすトレー｣のついてに映画です。それでは、三人いじめっ子は四人犠牲者の子供にいじめます。たたかいしたために、ラルフぃーはいじめっ子を直面します。そのたたかいには、いじめっ子のグループリーダーとラルフィーをたたかいします。

　最近でも、両方国はパソコンと携帯電話でいじめます。インターネットには、いじめは人気になっていますが、とても便利です。いんたねっとはからだをキスつけませんから、家族と友達と先生を見えません。新しい電機のいじめは内緒と思います。これから、先生と家族と友達は犠牲者にまもってできません。実は、よく先生や家族を知りません。FacebookやTwitterなどいじめてできます。それでは、いじめは恥ずべきと同時に両方公共とプライベートです。全然はきんこしません。インターネットのいじめから、人々に自殺を良くやります。

文楽

　日本に住んだとき、文楽を見ました。大阪学院大学の芸術的な授業では、見えました。切符は暇ですから、行きました。その先生は有名なびわぷれアーですが、切符は暇です。有名な先生もいるから、文楽の人形を触れられます。この人形はとても表と思います。怖い人形と河合人形に写真を撮りました。写真の跡で、文楽を見ました。このショーは三時半ぐらいです。銃五分始めて跡に、寝ました。左の人右の人間に寝ましたから、私も寝ました。残念と思います。でも、半分終わりに、起きました。このショーの終わりにはとても楽しかった。ペースは速くなりますから、眠くなりませんでした。左と右の日と全部寝ました。このおわりはきれいな戦いがあります。たぶん有名なショーのばけものがたり、でも名前を覚えられません。

アメリカの自動販売機

私は子供時、アメリカにたくさん自動販売機がいっぱいありました。１９９０年時代に、どこもへ、見えました。小学校、中学校、高校、会社などがありました。アメリカの自動販売機は明るく、カラフルなデサインと音が大きいでした。１９９０時代に皆さんはたくさんあまいおかしや食べ物を食べたとポップを飲んだから、太くなりました。政府と保険当局に学校へ削除しなければなりませんでした。しても、半分自動販売機を早く削除しました。

アメリカへコンビには自動販売機よりが好きな使います。一番目の大好きなジャンクフード場所は喫茶店やマックドナルドです。アメリカ人は練られなくなってから、深夜に食べたいかエネルギーを飲みたいです。高校生と大学生はよくマックドナルドとコーヒーが好きな食べますが、自動販売機を使いません。

Communist Party: Politics, Language & Literature

Sorry for the late post. I know it seems like I must have abandoned this blog, but have faith, I haven't. I have just been really busy juggling two jobs and a feeble attempt of a social life. Since today was my day off I finished watching the Excel Saga anime by Nabeshin with my bestest buddy, Tobi. We also swung by Magers and Quinn bookstore and I bought a lot of books. I bought a lot of books pertaining to Japan and the Japanese language. Specifically speaking, I bought:

• Making Out in Japanese 2

The Communist Party is supposedly growing in Japan. This Article brought it to my attention (and reminded me that I had been neglecting this blog for far too long.)  According to various foreigner blogs and smaller news sites, the Communist Party in Japan is not only its oldest political party, but making a comeback in contemporary society. The Christian Science Monitor noted on how in the most recent election, they had a strong influence due to heavy campaigning online.

Uniqlo: Shopping

So... I was working on this post last fall when I read an article in the Star Tribune about how popular Uniqlo is and how it is making advancements to fashion and "changing rooms" by planning on spreading out branches throughout the rest of the US after the New York one continues on prospering and might even have digital screens that can image an outfit onto a person so they can see what it looks like without trying it on. I could have misread that, but I am pretty sure that's something the article had mentioned. Anywho... here is my meager comprehensible researching on the popularity of Uniqlo in NYC. Sorry I couldn't remember more to actually write a decent post about how surprisingly popular Uniqlo is in New York and how this cultural expansion might be benefiting Japan during this period of economic turmoil continued. I will definitely have to come back to this topic later and do some nitty gritty informational gathering.

MOVIE REVIEW: Deadball

So last Sunday I watched "Deadball" with my ex, like we do every two weeks. We were also going to watch another film, but his girlfriend was panicking due to upcoming finals and so we ended up going over to her apartment and comforting her until almost three in the morning. She was so upset that she "ruined" our night, but we were actually between films, just finishing one and about to start another, so neither of us was upset at all--we were more concerned with all the stress she has been dealing with lately.

Anywho, here is my review of Deadball!

Since my ex and I watch a lot of anime (well I read more manga, but whatever) we realized almost all of the characters were a direct parody or an exact character from a well known manga or anime, such as the main character from Cromartie High School, or Yubeh Yakyu being very similar to Yubei Yagyu from another anime. The most exciting part of the film was recognizing characters or tropes of characters based off of how they acted, what they looked like, and how they died. It was really fun because we are so nerdy that we got almost all of them, even though the definitive plot didn't necessarily contribute to them as individuals. Normally, characters who get names are important to the plot (although I could have missed something culturally).

I think that making a parody of all the anime characters was a bit relevant because the general "moral" of the film seemed to be "don't lie," although that seemed to vary a bit to the storyline as well. I think that the death of each character on the "male" team was important because it seemed like the director wanted to kill off fandoms, the iconic characters that drive people to blow all of their savings on an image, an idea instead of moving towards something progressive. It seemed a bit obvious during the latter part of the film when the main character strove to save his vaguely attached peers (although that too was a failure for the most part). The best part was how he actually was able to wipe out all of the people who was just trying to use him and others like him for their own purposes, meaning the warden, the warden's underling, and the corrupt politician who seemed to have wanted the warden dead and backstabbed Yubeh Yagyu by making him Japan's most wanted criminal.

I also thought that, because it is supposed to be part of the horror-genre of films, it was sending a message to both fandoms and the corruption of "the system" everyone on the hierarchy was worse than the last. The warden's underling physically abused inmates by "checking anal cavities for contraband," while the warden allowed this and was a nazi herself. The politician, Mifune (also a possible parody of a character and an actual politician--we were sure of the first, but not of the latter), went back on his word to the point that North Korea stepped in to help the unfortunate Yubeh. North Korea was a savior, helping manipulated Yubeh seek his just revenge for himself and his only friend.  Part of this film seemed to be a political/social commentary, like most horror films because of the sudden appearance of North Korea, the politician Mifune, and the general treatment of the inmates as well as pitting the girls against the boys. It seemed like a social commentary because they tried teamwork, in traditional Japanese style, and it worked in their favor, except there was a traitor in the group that that sabotaged the boys, that sabotaged the girls. The girls didn't even get the decency of clothes, as the boys didn't get uniforms. Neither was equipped for a baseball game, although the girls were actually prepared and told the game would be to kill. None of the characters ended up with a happy ending, as the struggle seemed to keep growing deeper whenever they tried to accommodate each other or support each other. They were in it together, but death seemed to be the only uniting bond after suffering.

One thing my ex pointed out was how many films we watch--horror, action, etc, show the female characters as miserly and cruel towards men, inciting their wrath or revenge. The warden was no exception to this as she was a cruel nazi who let her underling sexually/physically molest their person once their freedom was taken away. Even the controlled musical duo "Poo Poo" kicked at the male announcer when he grabbed onto them as they tried to escape. They kicked at him (and spit?) and said that he was a pervert, but had acted cute and happy during the first half of the baseball game. This sudden switch was shocking and almost made one pity him until they spoke against him. I don't know why or how this trend is, but my ex was inquiring as to how this chronic portrayal might affect Japanese people socially. I couldn't answer because I didn't notice until he pointed it out and referenced other media we've viewed together.

This film was over-the-top in gore and explicitness of the gore, although it was done in a comedic style and wasn't mortifying like Hostel, Human Centipede, or Grotesque (Japanese film). It was very much like an anime, even unto the end and never kept the audience bored with unnecessary gore or  conversation. Some of the cultural references baffled us, but made us laugh overall because of the stylistic filming.

I highly recommend this film if you have a large understanding of Japanese cultural and subcultural references because it will make the understanding of each character that more exciting and will deepen the connection between the viewer and the film. Although watching this film without much understanding will still keep a viewer intrigued, the connection to anime will keep the viewer in suspense.

This is a list of media I donated to the Anime Club (later renamed Anime Society) at my university. My friends Katelyn and Cass took some, which is fine because most of it was purchased at my local library's book sale and was a general donation for the club to do whatever they please with it. I wanted a list of the titles so if I ever want to replace or reread or pick up reading where I left off, I will have access to this information. But.... since I am posting it here, I obviously wanted to share my tastes in manga with you all. I generally stick to action/adventure and anything mythical/magical.

I know that a lot of the general tastes in popularity vastly differ between America and Japan and I think that it is important because supposedly these popular ones in America are very popular in Japan. Yet when I talk to my otaku friends or go to kinokuniya/manga-ya in Osaka, I see other manga being promoted instead. For example, one piece was kinda "eh" in America when it first arrived and died out in popularity after some time. Then it became uber popular in Japan/stayed popular? and when it hit the lists in America again, the fandom skyrocketed, unlike the first time. I don't have the specifics to speak clearly on this, though I am sure someone has kept Wikipedia up to date on all of One Piece's history.

So...

Here is one of my final assignments for Japanese language classes. I was writing about work and employment. I might be wrong, since it has been a while since I read all of this, but I was writing about work and what I might do after graduation. This first draft is what I wrote on the city bus on the way to work one day. I wrote it hastily in purple ink on a large sheet of white paper. I originally didn't write the kanji in, so some of it might be typo'd a bit. I also wrote it while I was talking to a woman on the bus who wanted to know what I was writing and why and in what language, so I ended up spending most of the route talking about my trip abroad and where the lady next to me had been in Asia.

This second draft below is the final copy I submitted to my professor after I had finished writing. I wanted my professor to really know what I was going through when I was making all of these decisions and asking her to write me letters of recommendations and such and just where I was overall at in life. This final version down below is one a friend edited for me. When I was typing up the second, final version above, I was talking to my friend abroad about the paper and the best or most proper ways to use certain words and verbs. He asked me to send him a copy, which I did, and he ended up with this. He is so funny, telling me I should just hand in his corrected version because it is neater and less mistaken. But I didn't, because I know that it is always better to hand in my own work, even if I don't do an amazing job, as well as a teacher can always identify the true works of a student in a class of two. I am really jealous though because his looks so much more professional and reads smoother than mine does. I wish I could write as well as him, which motivates me to continue my studies!

私は人とコミュニケーションすることが好きだから、将来サービス産業に入ろうと思っています。大勢な人と 話すことによって、今まで経験できないことあるいは、やりたくても今の私ではできないことを知恵の糧としてもらうことができます。コミュニケーションで自 分でも成長していくと思います。まだまだ未熟者ですが、これからもっとがんばろうと思っています。
