So many months ago I was at a restaurant with my BFFFFFF Tobi. She and I were having dinner and catching up. As we got up from our high-walled booth to leave, we saw televisions at the bar playing a movie. The movie was so over the top ridiculous and showed a giant, slightly deformed man fighting a weird monster with a giant eye out of a tube. We asked the waitress what the name of the movie was, and it was "Big Man Japan." Wow! I knew I had to see it as soon as I saw monsters and politeness.
So a few weeks ago I was over at my ex's house watching movies with him like we did every week since before we got together and even after we broke up. I was very persistent that he not watch this movie because I wanted to stun him with the absurdity of it all. I even had him not read up on it because I didn't want him to spoil the absurdness for himself. I likewise didn't watch or read up on it beforehand because... I forgot to.
This movie was amazing! It had giant monsters, it had a documentary style, and it had... rude western themed power rangers! Nothing in this movie was really explained, nor did it need to be. It was the kind of movie a pothead or a drunk might like because there is no real plot to follow and doesn't require much concentration. It is also hilarious because the ending occurs out of nowhere. The majority of the film is just following Big Man around and learning how he lives and how he copes with being unpopular compared to his father or his grandfather. It is kind of like watching a third or fourth generation super human cope with not being as amazing as their parents were imagined, just because they aren't anything new and don't do anything different or more special than their ancestors. As a result a lot of people might consider the film boring because it is slow, but it takes time to realize that the government is using him and he isn't well liked because he "is nothing special" unlike his grandpa and is unable to do everything everyone demands of him.
I enjoyed this movie because of how slow it was to start with the documentary style and the low action fight scenes. As a result, I wouldn't recommend this movie for everyone because of the filming style. Instead of putting all of these facts upfront and directly addressing them, the indirect documentary style allows the viewer to come to understand about as much as the filming crew does. However, the ending sidewinds Big Man as well, leaving some viewers with a potential disdain for the movie.
If you don't mind spoiling the plot for yourself, take a read up on the wiki page here.
I hope the next few films I plan to review are:
Funky Forest
Deadball
Meatball Machine
Machine Girl
